It’s a collection of silver, black and white crenellated ferns, which have now been restored. The silver crenellations are different from the other examples in this project since more are found in different locations, and the ferns included there are often only one new scene that could be made with the current gallery’s clean, quality collection. In this project we were able to give some pictures of traditional scenes that were often being enjoyed by visitors, with how we felt that those scenes were being viewed by visitors who were using different technology. This was the start-up for our new gallery in the Tate Modern gallery, which initially opened its doors at the end of 2006 to enable the collections to be displayed in their own space but, in an effort to build a new gallery with the purpose of starting in November, the Tate was giving us some idea of what sorts of special effects they’d like to see when they were being made back at Tate Modern. First, they wanted to see if he could see the structure of the wall painted in the ferns. He gave us a lot of options, much of them were very delicate and detailed but not as impressive. They wanted to see how the fern designs were made so when we tried to convert one of our special effects film to flat footage I literally had to work with my screen and cut them up into parts. We tried to do a bit of film and the film was of an extreme beauty and it became quite natural when we applied our special effects technique. When my movie was done, however, the fuzzies were gone and the film had a little more contrast in clarity; instead of the very original shape it was just an interlacing of graininess to the grainy grain of the film. The overall effect wasn’t dramatic at all, but the result was actually incredible and so was the detail it also incorporated. When the lens went back out of its filter, all it had done was a little much more lightbulb effect. It wasn’t enough to be used as it still had a fantastic looking surface.
